Anyone want to share opinions on AKC Premier course design? Especially as it relates to big dogs. Is it the usual “depends on the judge?” How do the challenges compare to Masters? Love the classes ? Hate the classes?

Agility people

How often do you jump your dogs? What other conditioning/practice do you do on your non jumping days?

Went to the AKC trial in Santa Rosa today. We did Novice Standard and Open Jumpers, and Q’d in both, which lets us move up to Open Standard!

Things started out rather tough because I thought this was a standard agility trial, but when I arrived it was an actual Dog Show, sprawling the entire fairgrounds. I ended up in the wrong parking lot three times (one was reserved for judges, one for visitors, and I have no idea what the last was) before I found the correct one. Then we wandered around asking random passerby, “I’m supposed to be at an agility trial. Do you know where it is?” until we finally found the place it was being held. Needless to say, I was rather stressed upon arrival.

Then we found out it was in a covered arena, which Bindi finds intimidating, because of the way the sounds echo. So she was rather stressed as well!

I had very little time to set up my crate, walk my Jumpers course, and entice Bindi to play before my run, but she was a trooper and handled it pretty well! She was distracted going in and missed the first weave entry because she was looking over her shoulder, but she got the second attempt, and the rest of the course passed without mishap.

She got some time to chill in her crate before our Standard run, and it went much better. She was still significantly slower than she is when on grass, and she took f o r e v e r to get down the teeter, but she got the weaves on the first try, and she looked like she was having fun at the end.

I told her she was great, and several people complimented us on our run.

Then, because I’ve never been to a conformation show, we went over to watch those rings for a bit. I know nothing about conformation anything, but we got the tail end of the herding dogs, and I am super bummed we missed the terv trotting around the ring by about thirty seconds. We watched a bit of the sporting dogs before we headed out. I felt kind of awkward watching because Bindi was literally the only mixed breed in the area. I tried looking like a competitor that had wandered over from the agility area. XD

I stopped by McDonalds to buy her a hamburger patty as a reward for a job well done. She definitely recognized where she was and was very excited.

Had a good trial today! This was our third AKC show, and we did Standard Novice P and Jumpers Novice P, and Q’d in both! I think we can move up to Open in Jumpers now.

It was quite hot and humid, but Bindi ran really well! We practiced some take-offs on the warm-up jump, and that pumped her up enough that she had a good amount of energy and speed for the courses! Unfortunately, I could feel her running out of gas during our Standard course, but she still did super well, and I’m very proud of her. She’s very heat-sensitive, and running in the full sun in the summer heat is very difficult for her.

Most exciting news: She did the weaves on the first try for both runs!!! I concentrated really hard on giving the right cue and holding position until she was in, and that seemed to work really well.

I bought her a meat patty from McDonald’s on the way home as a reward. Pretty soon she’s going to start salivating when we enter a drive-through.

I’d like to add that she is handling going to new venues incredibly well. I’m so impressed at how calmly she handles the new people, dogs, and environment, as long as she gets at least fifteen minutes to simply hang out and take everything in. Once she knows what to expect, she’s ready to play and have a great time.

The good, the bad, the ugly haha. Haven’t trialed for 2 months but it was great getting back to it. Besides the weave pole fiascos, Django did really well and has sped up a bit I think (something we’ve been working on at the few classes we’ve been able to attend!). Time to drill some weave poles looks like!

Will eventually put together a video of everything this weekend, but here’s a bit more of Cas’ Novice Jumpers with Weaves run!

His Owner/Breeder was absolutely tickled pink with how his debut went.

The past 3 Fridays we’ve gotten to compete, HQ has gone 3 for 3 in the Open Jumpers ring and polished off her OAJ title this past Friday.

But wait- there’s more! Harleen also finished her Novice Standard (NA) title with a few faults (for extra flair) and finished that title with a second place to— SCOUT!!!! First time in Novice Standard and that boy cleaned up with a perfect score. So incredibly proud of him!

Renegade is now at 2/3 for his Novice FAST title and is a BLAST to run.

Agility video from this weekend’s trial! No Q’s in Standard but we got our final Excellent Q on Saturday to move up to Masters, and on Sunday our first Masters run we got a Q and our first Championship points towards a MACH! Whoo! Django has really picked up speed (especially in the weaves!!) during competition which makes me very happy to see! We’re slowly getting this thing down ;P

Video of our AKC Agility trial this weekend. Spoiler: not great XD 1 Q, 3 NQ’s. Django seemed extra distracted and made a lot of weird mistakes (2 weave pole faults which is odd for him??). His allergies have flared up recently and I wonder if that’s part of it; he’s probably not feeling his greatest :c We had a fun time regardless!

Just finally found the page to look up AKC trial events and there’s a trial coming up in a few months in San Antonio that allows toys in the ring??

I wasn’t aware any agility association had trials that allowed toys within the ring during runs, unless this is a rare exception or I’m not understanding what they deem toys in the ring. Wonder if the laser pointer would count as a ‘toy’, because if so, the cheap entry fee and 1.5 hour travel is tempting to try. Bonus points: the place is hosted in an indoor facility with AC.

Edit: Also, sent off my change request for Cas’ registration name to be adjusted to “AAC’s Wings Sold Separately” because it needed to be done and is worth the $25 fee.

Our 4th Class and Vlog #8

Our 4th Class and Vlog #8 #akcagility #core2s15. Watch Belle go up on the A-frame!

Just a funny side note: No one asked me why I was recording/taking pictures of class until I put a GoPro on Belle.

But now that everyone knows, people have been staying out of my camera shots! Hooray!

On to class:

We started with a low jump. Normally, Belle goes over these fine. I mean, she hesitates some but it’s not like she’s…
